Which AOI fits high-mix, low-volume PCB assembly? A sourced comparison of programming input, 2D or 3D, form factor and published prices, plus how to test vendor claims on your own boards.

Short answer. For high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) PCB assembly, the best AOI is the one that turns a new board into a working inspection program fastest, with the inputs you actually receive from customers, run by the people you actually have. Camera specs matter less than three questions: what does programming require (CAD, a component library, or one good board), how long does it take per new job, and does false-call tuning carry over to the next board or start again.
Disclosure: DaoAI makes AOI machines and wrote this page. Every claim about another vendor below is quoted or summarised from that vendor's own published material, linked in the Sources section and checked on October 5, 2026. Vendor performance claims are the vendor's, not ours, and none of them are independently verified here.
A high-volume line programs a board once and runs it for months, so it can afford hours of setup. An HMLV shop may introduce several new jobs a week, often from customers who send Gerbers late, partial or not at all. Five things decide whether an AOI keeps up:
We cover the selection method in detail in How to Choose an AOI for High-Mix PCB Assembly. This page applies it to the platforms buyers most often shortlist.

DaoAI (offline P1, P1L, P2; inline P3, P3D; inline 3D P5, P5D; through-hole A3). The whole range shares one software stack built around golden-board programming: the operator scans one verified good board and the software generates the inspection program without CAD data or a prebuilt component library. DaoAI states program generation takes 30 seconds to 5 minutes, and that a new board is typically ready for production inspection in about 5 to 10 minutes (DaoAI-reported). Models run on the machine and do not need an internet connection. The offline machines are 2D; measured height is available on the inline P5 and P5D. See AOI programming without CAD files for how the workflow runs.
MIRTEC MV-3 OMNI MARK-II. A benchtop 3D AOI for SMT and THT assemblies. Programming uses MIRTEC's AI Auto-Matching. Our full comparison is in DaoAI vs MIRTEC.
Koh Young Zenith family with KAP. KAP is Koh Young's AI auto-programming software, built on the machine's 3D measurement data. The Zenith range is inline 3D. See DaoAI vs Koh Young.
SAKI 3Di EX series. Inline 3D AOI. SAKI describes automated program creation tools and a program data format shared with its SPI and AXI systems. See DaoAI vs SAKI.
Viscom iS6052. Inline 3D AOI that Viscom positions for large-scale manufacturing. See DaoAI vs Viscom.
Manncorp Sherlock range. Manncorp is the only vendor here that lists prices. The Sherlock line is 2D for pre-reflow and post-reflow inspection; Manncorp's inline 3D option is the RV2-3DH.
Because each claim is measured against a different baseline. MIRTEC compares against manual teaching and against auto teaching without deep learning. Koh Young reports program creation time. DaoAI states an absolute generation time and a typical time to production-ready inspection. The vendors do not use the same start and stop points, and none says how long it takes to tune false calls down to a level your verify station can live with.
For an HMLV shop the number that matters is time from receiving a new board to a production-ready program, done by your own operator, on your own board. Here is a simple way to see why it dominates the decision. If you introduce N new jobs a week and each takes T hours to program and tune, the AOI costs you N × T hours of skilled time every week. At 4 new jobs a week, the difference between a 3 hour and a 30 minute setup is 10 hours of engineering time, every week, before any false-call rework. Use your own N and T; they are the only figures that apply to you.
Measure it during a demo. How to Evaluate an AI AOI System Before You Buy lists the boards to bring and the five numbers to record.
| If your main constraint is... | What to prioritise | Platforms in this comparison built around it |
|---|---|---|
| New jobs every week, customer CAD often missing | Programming that starts from a physical board | DaoAI (golden board, no CAD required) |
| High-reliability work, solder volume and lifted leads | Inline 3D | DaoAI P5/P5D, Koh Young Zenith, SAKI 3Di, Viscom iS6052 |
| No dedicated AOI programmer on staff | A workflow an operator can run | DaoAI (golden board scan, program generated automatically) |
| Board images must stay inside the plant | On-machine models, no cloud dependency | DaoAI (no internet connection required); ask other vendors directly |
This table is a map of what each vendor says its product is built for, not a ranking. A platform can be strong in a row where it is not listed; ask the vendor.
DaoAI fits shops where programming effort is the bottleneck: frequent new jobs, missing or late CAD, and no dedicated AOI programmer. One software stack covers offline, inline 2D, inline 3D and through-hole (A3, pre- and post-wave in one machine), so a board programmed on a benchtop P2 uses the same workflow as the inline line. DaoAI is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.
In the DaoAI range, measured 3D is on the inline P5 and P5D; the offline P1, P1L and P2 are 2D. Whichever platforms you shortlist, test the numbers on your own boards before they go into a purchase decision.
What is the best AOI machine for high-mix, low-volume production? There is no single best machine. The best fit is the platform that turns your new boards into production-ready programs fastest with the inputs you receive and the staff you have. Start from programming input, end-to-end setup time per job, and whether you need measured 3D, then test the shortlist on your own boards.
Do I need 3D AOI for high-mix, low-volume assembly? Only if your escapes or customer requirements involve height: lifted leads, coplanarity, solder volume, tall or tilted parts. If your defect history is mainly missing parts, polarity, offset and bridges, 2D covers it at lower cost. Check your last quarter's defect Pareto before paying for 3D.
How much does an AOI machine cost? Most AOI vendors only quote. Manncorp publishes list prices, which are a useful reference: $49,995 for its Sherlock 300FA benchtop 2D machine up to $209,995 for its RV2-3DH inline 3D machine (manncorp.com, October 2026). What drives the price is covered in How Much Does an AOI Machine Cost?
Can an AOI be programmed without CAD files? Yes. DaoAI's machines generate the inspection program from one physical golden board with no CAD file or prebuilt component library. For any other platform, ask the vendor which inputs are optional and which are required, because "auto programming" can still depend on CAD or a library.
Is a benchtop AOI enough for a high-mix shop? Often, yes. Offline benchtop machines program and inspect without stopping the SMT line, which suits frequent changeovers. Inline AOI becomes necessary when every board must be inspected at line speed. See Offline vs Inline vs 3D AOI.
