Mek AOI Alternative: DaoAI vs Mek (Marantz Electronics) Compared

DaoAI vs Mek (Marantz Electronics) AOI: golden-board vs EZPro AI-assisted programming, inline and desktop 3D, through-hole, and how to test both.

DaoAI auto-programmed inspection windows outlined on the components of a PCB assembly

Direct answer. DaoAI is an alternative to Mek (Marantz Electronics) AOI for SMT and through-hole lines. The main difference is what a new program starts from. Every DaoAI AOI programs itself from one golden board in 30 seconds to 5 minutes. No CAD, Gerber or component library is required. Mek says ISO-Spector M2 programs "can be prepared offline from CAD and Gerber data or updated instantly once production begins," with AI-assisted programming through its EZPro software. DaoAI's inline 3D P5 and P5D are available now, the A3 covers through-hole before and after wave in one machine, and all AI runs on the machine.

How does programming compare?

Mek's 2026 description of the ISO-Spector M2 gives two routes: programs "can be prepared offline from CAD and Gerber data or updated instantly once production begins." It adds that, using AI-assisted programming through EZPro, the M2 "can detect defects from hundreds of parameters while giving operators full control to refine inspection criteria." Offline preparation from CAD and Gerber lets an engineer build a program before boards reach the line, provided that data is available and current.

DaoAI starts from the physical board. The machine builds the full inspection program from one golden board in 30 seconds to 5 minutes. No CAD, Gerber or component library is required, so a new board can be inspected as soon as the first good one is built. CAD or BOM data is optional, never required. See AOI programming without CAD files and the auto-programming feature page.

A fair test question for both vendors: how long from a brand-new board, with only the board in hand, to a released program?

What does each lineup cover?

Mek describes modular, inline and desktop systems and is known for its iSpector and PowerSpector platforms. Recent products include the ISO-Spector M2 3D AOI, the SpectorBOX X1 for 3D inspection of through-hole assemblies, the VeriSpector for assembly-station inspection of SMT boards, the PowerSpector JSAz550 3D desktop AOI for boards up to 550 × 550 mm, and the PowerSpector SP1 for solder paste inspection.

DaoAI offers offline 2D (P1, P1L, P2), inline 2D (P3, P3D), inline 3D (P5, P5D, available now) and through-hole (A3, pre- and post-wave in one machine), all on one software platform with the same golden-board programming. For a high-mix plant, that means the offline P1L on an NPI bench and an inline P5D on a production line are programmed the same way. See AOI for NPI and prototype lines.

Where does the AI run, and who supports you?

All AI on a DaoAI machine runs on the machine, and inspection data never leaves your factory. See on-premise AI AOI and data security.

DaoAI provides sales and engineering support from its North American team in Vancouver, plus authorized partners. Mek lists Mek Americas LLC in Las Vegas for the Americas.

What drives total cost of ownership?

Over the life of an AOI, these costs usually outweigh the purchase price, whether you choose DaoAI or Mek:

How to evaluate DaoAI against Mek on your own boards

  1. Board-only programming. Hand each system the same new board with no CAD or Gerber and time it to a released program.
  2. Programming with data. Repeat with CAD and Gerber available, and record any differences.
  3. Detection. Use boards with known defects, such as solder balls, component shift and lifted leads, and count escapes.
  4. False-call review time. Log operator minutes per board over several hundred boards, before and after tuning.
  5. Through-hole. Compare the same THT board before and after wave.
  6. Data handling. Confirm where images and models are stored.

FAQ

Does Mek AOI need CAD data?

Mek says ISO-Spector M2 programs can be prepared offline from CAD and Gerber data or updated once production begins, with AI-assisted programming through EZPro. Whether CAD is required for every new board is not stated in the materials reviewed; confirm with Mek.
